Led by Dr. Kristy Timmons, the ECE LAB studies how the adults in young children’s lives shape what those children learn. We examine what educators expect of children, how early learning is defined and assessed, and how educators are prepared and supported, measuring children’s outcomes alongside educators’ knowledge and practice. We approach this work from the perspective of social determinants of health and learning, which recognizes that early experiences shape lifelong health and wellbeing, with particular attention to children who are historically and continuously marginalized. Our research is carried out in partnership with the people it concerns, including early childhood educators, teachers, children, and families, and with community partners and not-for-profit organizations across public and private education contexts.
